Help Your Kids Get Active – Fighting Childhood Obesity

First Lady Michelle Obama has made it her mission to fight childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United States, and it’s a serious problem. Obese children usually grow into obese adults, who are in ill health, are often unable to function normally in society, and who bear deep psychological scars as a result of their childhood obesity. If you want your children to grow up well-adjusted and healthy, it’s important to get your kids away from the TV and start moving. There are many methods and strategies that you can employ to show your kids that exercise is good for you, and that it can be fun, too.

Kids Get ActiveSigning your kids up for team sports is an easy way to get your kids away from the TV and start moving. By having a scheduled time for practices, you can make sure that your child is actually expecting to exercise instead of groaning whenever you suggest that they turn off the TV and go outside. Team sports are also a great way for kids to learn social skills and to learn how to play and work well with others. Whether you choose baseball, soccer, football, or any other sport, it’s great to be part of a team.

But not every kid likes to be a team player. Some kids prefer individual sports. If your child hates participating in team sports, don’t force it on him or her; you may wind up causing them to hate exercise. Instead, help them to find an activity that will get your kids away from the TV and start moving in a way that they enjoy. Swimming, martial arts, and dance are all great ways to get exercise, but they allow your child to pursue individual excellence instead of working as part of a team.

Exercising as a family is another great way to get your kids away from the TV and start moving. Your kids aren’t the only ones who need to exercise, and it’s important for you to set a good example for them in this area. By doing it together, you’re not only setting a good example and getting exercise that you also need, but you’re also spending time together as a family. It will not only strengthen your body, but will also strengthen your family bond. Your kids will appreciate that you want to spend time with them.

Ultimately, the best way to get your kids away from the TV and start moving is to make sure that exercise is fun for them. If they’re having fun doing it, then they’ll want to do it. Instead of hearing a chorus of groans when you turn off the TV and force them out into the sunlight, they’ll be coming up to you asking if it’s time for soccer practice. You may even find them practicing on their own because they want to get better at it. The key is to present exercise to them in a way that they enjoy.
